Saint Mary (ruin), Colston Bassett
The building
The former church of Saint Mary, Colston Bassett was replaced by the new church of Saint John the Divine in 1892. Since that time, it has fallen into ruin but has recently been consolidated and made safe with the help of English Heritage and funding from the National Lottery. Further details of its history can be found on the Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project.
Church and community
Although the church is a ruin, the graveyard is still the active consecrated burial ground for the village and relatives and friends often visit to pay their respects. All are welcome to enter the grounds and the building to experience the peaceful nature of the location and reflect on its long Christian history and our continuing engagement with it. If you wish to use the church or grounds for any other purpose, please seek permission in advance by completing this form.
In addition to burials, occasional ‘outdoor’ services are held in the church, including an Easter Sunrise service and a summer Picnic and Praise.
Maintenance of the building and grounds remains the responsibility of the parish and in 2024 we raised £30,000 through grants and village fundraising to repair damage to the mortar caused largely by masonry bees!
