Saint John the Divine, Colston Bassett
The building
Saint John the Divine lies in the civil parish of Colston Bassett and serves the village of that name. The church dates from 1892 and is centrally located in the village, replacing the old Norman church of Saint Mary (now a ruin) on the hill at the edge of the present village. Further details of its history can be found on the Parish Council web site and on the Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project.
Church and community
The village of Colston Bassett has a strong sense of community and the church is very much a part of this. We hold several themed non-Holy Communion services a year, which we promote strongly and to which residents of the village who are not regular worshippers are invited. Since they were introduced in 2017, average congregations at these services have tripled. In 2025, these services will include a Father’s Day Service in the village pub, a Picnic & Praise Service as well as a Sunrise Service on Easter Day, both at our ruined but much-treasured St. Mary’s Church, a Pets’ Service and a Village Thanksgiving Service, as well as traditional festivals.
The church organises an annual harvest lunch and village quiz and instigated a popular monthly breakfast club in our lovely village hall.
All of our services are listed on the parish calendar, but a list of services and events for 2025 can be seen below. Click here for a downloadable and printable version (opens in a new tab)
