Southwell and Nottingham Diocese
The Parish of Wiverton in the Vale is in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, which is one of the 12 dioceses in the Province of York (the other Province in the Church of England being the Province of Canterbury, which comprises 30 dioceses).
Each diocese in the Church of England is headed by a bishop and each province is headed by an archbishop.
The diocesan bishop is the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Right Reverend Paul Williams and the suffragan bishop is the Bishop of Sherwood designate, the Reverend Dr Andrew Emerton.
The archbishop of York is the Most Reverend John Sentamu.
The Diocesan Synod considers matters sent to it from General Synod, deanery synods, PCCs and from individual Diocesan Synod members. It formulates diocesan policy on a wide range of issues, advises the bishop as appropriate, and votes on the funding of stipends, central administration costs, and contributions to the National Church, to be raised from the deaneries. Its role is primarily advisory and consultative. In some ways it is comparable with the House of Commons, as elected representatives engage in public debate.
